The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism (OMMT) helps health and social care staff better support autistic people and people with a learning disability.
The training gives staff the knowledge and confidence to provide safe, respectful and person‑centred care.

About the Oliver McGowan Training
The training is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death highlighted the need for better understanding of learning disability and autism across health and care services.

Who Should Attend the Training
The training is for health and social care staff who work with autistic people and people with a learning disability and is mandatory in Law.
Participants complete either Tier 1 or Tier 2 training depending on their job role. This ensures staff receive the right level of training for the work they do.

How the Training is Delivered
The e‑learning training is the first part of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training. Everyone must complete the e‑learning, no matter where they work.
After completing the e‑learning, participants will then complete either Tier 1 or Tier 2 training depending on their job role.

Tier 1– Live one‑hour interactive online session

Tier 2 – One‑day face‑to‑face training session
All sessions are delivered by a trio of trainers, which includes:

a trainer with lived experience of a learning disability

an autistic trainer
-
an experienced facilitating trainer
All trainers are fully approved and accredited to deliver the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training.

How is the training delivered?
Step 1 – E‑learning All participants complete the national Oliver McGowan e‑learning module.
Step 2 – Live Training Participants then attend Tier 1 or Tier 2 training depending on their job role.
Tier 1 – Online session (1 hour)
Tier 2 – Face‑to‑face training (1 day).
