The Care Act

The Care Act is a really important thing which will make a big difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities and autisic people.

It brings together lots of very complicated laws and rules for how people can get the care and support they need.

Because it is new and it is still quite hard to understand, Speakup has worked hard to make an Easyread version for people with learning disabilities and autistic people.

The Easyread Care Act tells you the important things about the Care Act and it is a good idea to work through it with someone you trust. It can also be a great tool to use in groups so people can talk about it together.

So what does it mean for you?

  • Local Authorities (Councils) have to do more to give you the right information which you can understand about how to get the care and support you need.

  • The rules that say who can get care and support are now all the same wherever you live in the country.

  • Carers have new rights to get support if they care for someone else.

  • You now have the right to get a Personal Budget or Direct Payment

  • Local Authorities (Councils) now have to give support to more people like people in prison. More support for people moving from Children’s Services to Adult Services and also people who have moved away to another part of the country.

You can go through it on your own, with support or in groups.
