Run by people with learning disabilities and autism our advocacy service is dedicated to improving and valuing lives.
We work at promoting Inclusion, Choice, Rights, and Independence.
We are celebrating 30 years of Advocacy! Speakup started in 1988 and has since grown to become one of the leading advocacy Charities in the UK. The difference for Speakup has always been having people with learning disabilities at the centre of all we do. Speakup is run by and for people with learning disabilities and employs people as part of our equal team.
People are involved in all parts of the work we do, from organising things day to day, delivering training, supporting each other, writing scripts and acting in films, meeting with other groups and government departments and making sure advocacy and the rights of people with learning disabilities are always at the top.
Our track record is proven, over the years our self-advocates have worked with numerous organisations at a local, regional and national level to deliver and influence policy change that improves the lives of people with a learning disability. This includes work with the Learning Disabilities Task-force, the Department of Health, the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Education, the Ministry of Justice, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Social Care Institute for Excellence and the Care Quality Commission and BT.
Recently we have been sharing our experience with people in Canada – to find out more about this click here.
